Cotton, from its origins up to the present day

It is extremely difficult to give a date to the origin of cotton. One thing is certain though, reading certain parts of the Bible proves that cotton was already being used by the Jews to make materials

Classic Greece discovered it thanks to the conquests of Alexander Magno in Asia and North Africa.
During the conquest of America, Hernán Cortés discovered fields of cotton, the gossypium hirsutum species, in Mexico.

The area where this cultivation enjoyed considerable expansion was in the South of the United States thanks to the labour of the slaves.
Up until a few decades ago, cotton was picked entirely by hand, despite the fact the first transformation processes has been mechanical for a long long time.

In 1794 the American mechanic Eli Whitney invented the "cotton gin". Today the mechanisation of cotton picking is to be found only in some countries (the USA and Australia) while cotton is still picked by hand in the rest of the world. At the moment, China is the leading producer with about 20% of world production followed by India and the United States. Egypt today is the main producer of precious cotton.
